Mandela was arrested in a countrywide police swoop on 5th December 1956, which led to the unsuccessful prosecution at the 1956 Treason Trial. However, he was arrested and imprisoned in 1962, and subsequently sentenced to life imprisonment for conspiring to overthrow the state following the Rivonia Trial. After serving 27 years in prison he was released on 11th February 1990.
