A recent report by the government, published in February 2021, revealed that there were only six ‘stop and search’ checks for every 1,000 White people, compared with 54 for every 1,000 Black people.

With little evidence that ‘stop & search’ has any significant or consistent association with crime, as published in the British Journal of Criminology titled ‘Does Stop and Search Deter Crime? Evidence From Ten Years of London-wide Data’, it is clear that Black people are being unjustly targeted.

The state of social play

For every step towards equality, new inequalities come to light.  It’s time to stop talking and to take action.

The Liberation Initiatives is therefore partnering with a prestigious law firm to launch its Crime Initiative with the aim to educate the young Black community on the subject.  This Initiative works with a number of schools in high crime areas to provide advice to children and parents about the law and their rights - especially around stop and search.  Within the schools, the Initiative is also providing a safe space in the form of a small law clinic for parents for them to voice any concerns they have and receive one to one support.

As the Initiative grows, we are expecting to extend our reach into more communities, as it is imperative to support marginalised people through unfair targeting and the emotional stress which results from this.

By working with us, you and your organisation can help to make a real difference. Your support will be directly enabling the work we do by educating young children and their parents and giving them the tools and support to tackle this unjust state of play.
